Indications You Might Need to Replace Your Grease Trap

The grease trap in your septic system is not meant to last forever. Learn about some signs that indicate your grease trap may need to be replaced.

If you have a septic system in your home or business, you probably know how important it is to keep it in good condition. One of the key components of a septic system is the grease trap, which is a device that separates grease and solids from the wastewater before it enters the septic tank. Grease traps prevent clogs, backups, and odors in your septic system. In addition, these important features protect the environment from harmful contaminants.

Nonetheless, grease traps are not meant to last forever. Over time, they can wear out, corrode, or malfunction, causing problems for your septic system and your property. Keep reading to learn about some signs that indicate your grease trap may need to be replaced.

Learn what common issues affect drain fields so that you can take proper care of your septic system.

           Overflowing Grease

If you notice grease spilling over the edges of your grease trap or leaking from the pipes, it means that your trap is no longer able to contain and pump out the grease effectively. This inefficiency can lead to clogs and backups in your septic system. Moreover, it can create a fire hazard and a health risk. You should replace your grease trap as soon as possible to avoid further damage and complications.

           Clogged Pipes

Clogged pipes are another sign that your grease trap is failing. If the grease trap is not working properly, the device may allow grease and solids to pass through and accumulate in the pipes that connect to your septic tank. This accumulation can cause slow drains, gurgling sounds, bad smells, and eventually, sewage backups in your sinks, toilets, and showers.

           Stinky Odors

A foul odor coming from your drains or your septic tank area is a clear indication that something is wrong with your septic system. One of the possible causes of foul odors is a dirty or damaged grease trap that is not properly filtering the food waste and grease from your wastewater.

The rotting debris can create a breeding ground for bacteria and mold, producing unpleasant smells and toxic gases that can affect your indoor air quality. You should have your grease trap cleaned regularly by a licensed septic service provider and replace it if the cleaning does not eliminate the odor.

           Metal Traps

If your grease trap is made of metal, such as steel or iron, you should consider replacing it with a more durable material, such as fiberglass or plastic. Metal grease traps are prone to rusting and corroding over time, which can compromise their performance and lifespan. Rust and corrosion can also contaminate your wastewater with harmful chemicals and metals, which can damage your septic system and pollute the environment.

           Frequent Pumping

An adequate grease trap should only need to be pumped every one to three months, depending on how much grease you produce and how often you use your septic system. However, if you find yourself needing to pump your grease trap more frequently than that, it could mean that your trap is too small for your needs, or that it's damaged and inefficient. Frequent pumping can be costly and inconvenient, as well as indicate a serious problem with your septic system.

A grease trap is an essential part of your septic system, helping it run smoothly and safely. However, like any other device, it can wear out over time and need to be replaced. If you suspect that you need a new grease trap or if you have other concerns about your septic system,

Ever wondered what your soil might secretly be telling you? Beneath the lush green grass and blooming flowers, your soil can reveal a story –– especially when septic waste is involved. It can be as subtle as a single telltale sign or as obvious as an entire system of alarms.

Understanding the signs of septic waste penetration can be a game-changer if you want to maintain the health of your landscape and the integrity of your property. Undetected waste leaks can quickly infiltrate your outdoor environment and render it unusable or even hazardous.

Buckle up and embark on this underground detective adventure to uncover two major clues that septic waste has made its way into the soil.

           Wet Spots or Standing Water

The presence of wet spots or standing water, particularly near the septic tank, is one of the earliest signs that something isn't quite right. It usually means that liquid waste has already breached the soil level and is actively draining into new areas.

When your septic system is functioning properly, all the wastewater from your home is treated and dispersed evenly into the soil through the drain field. However, if the septic tank overfills or there's a blockage in the system, wastewater can start to back up. This can lead to excessive moisture in the soil, resulting in unexplained wet spots or puddles in your yard.

In addition, wet spots or standing water can also point to a failing drain or leach field. The drain field's purpose is to filter and distribute the liquid waste from the septic tank into the subsoil. When it fails, the wastewater can't percolate properly into the soil and instead begins surfacing, creating wet spots or pools of water.

These signs not only suggest a problem with your septic system but also pose a potential health hazard due to the risk of exposure to untreated waste. The untreated wastewater can contain harmful bacteria and other contaminants, so make sure to address this issue as soon as you spot it.

           Lush Vegetation

Septic waste is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which can promote vegetation growth. These nutrients are typically released from an overfilled septic tank or a failed drain field, and they can make their way to the surface soil.

This encourages lush growth, which often appears in patches near the septic tank or drain field. You'll notice this grass looks greener than anywhere else in your yard.

While this might seem like a good thing at first, it's actually indicative of septic waste penetrating the soil, which could lead to groundwater contamination. The excess nutrients can even disrupt the pH balance of the soil and create a toxic environment for other plants in your landscape.

To make matters worse, such lush growth can also conceal a wet spot or pool of wastewater beneath the foliage. This can be especially dangerous if you have kids or pets that might come into contact with the contaminated water.

So if you spot lush vegetation that doesn't match the rest of your landscape, contact a septic specialist for an inspection to unmask the truth. They might recommend a soil test to determine your soil's exact concentration of septic waste. This will give them a better idea of the extent of the contamination to decide on what corrective measures to take.

For example, they might recommend that you replace the drain field or install a new system of leach lines. A drain field replacement usually involves excavating the area, removing the existing soil, and replacing it with fresh, clean soil to restore the balance.

Leach lines are typically an alternative approach that involves installing additional pipes to improve drainage. These pipes act as channels to distribute the liquid waste more uniformly and improve the performance of your septic system.

Your septic system consists of more than just the tank. The drain field is responsible for completing the safe processing of the effluent from the tank so that it can safely reenter the groundwater system. Clogs in the drain field can result in standing effluent out in the field, along with foul odors and the release of pathogens into the environment.

The most common problem is the simplest to resolve—an overly full septic tank that is in need of pumping. Signs of a full tank include slow drains or drain backups into the home, standing water near the tank or in the drain field, and foul sewage odors around the tank. A professional will need to check the tank to ascertain that it's time to pump it.

           Improper Waste

Sometimes the real source of the problem is at the first point of use, which is the drains inside your home. Certain items in the tank won't break down properly, so they can cause the tank to fill too quickly or the items may make their way into the drain field and clog the lines. Disposable wipes, diapers, and feminine hygiene products are common culprits, but even items coffee grounds and cooking oil can cause issues.

           System Overuse

Septic tanks and drain fields are sized to a specific range of use. Putting too much waste and fluid into the system can cause it to overfill, which will lead to drain field problems. Doing excessive amounts of laundry or having several long-term house guests will increase the load of effluent going into the tank, which can overwhelm both the tank and drain field. Reducing use or scheduling more frequent tank cleanings may be necessary.

           Field Clogs

If the tank is properly pumped and in good working order, then the issue may be with the drain field itself. Although drain fields can fail simply due to age, there are often other contributing factors that can be avoided or repaired.

           Tree Roots

Trees and other plants with deep roots don't have to be growing directly in the drain field in order to cause a problem. Roots can grow over a large distance, so even trees planted well away from the drain field can send out encroaching roots that will clog the drain field. Your septic service can advise on what plants to avoid near the tank and field, as well as provide guidance on removing problematic roots from the drain field.

           Mechanical Compaction

One of the more common compaction causes in a drain field is driving heavy equipment on the field. Heavier equipment, like driving mowers and lawn tractors, shouldn't be used on a drain field. It's also important to avoid parking or driving cars over the field. Further, don't put any structures on the drain field. Even a small storage shed can cause compaction and clogs.

           Biomat Overgrowth

The biomat is the mat of micro-organisms that grows and thrives on the effluent, thus helping to process it safely back into the environment. Problems occur when this biomat goes through a surge in growth and begins to clog the drain field. Over time, the biomat can become overgrown and begin to clog the very system that it is supposed to help. Limiting garbage disposal use and solids in the tank can slow biomat overgrowth.

is mandatory for optimal performance. However, a homeowner might need to pump the system earlier or later depending on various factors, including frequency of use and tank size. Nonetheless, regular septic tank inspection is essential for timely pumping.

Some homeowners believe that septic tank pumping contractors charge a flat fee. However, service providers consider various factors to establish the cost of emptying a wastewater processor. This article highlights five factors that influence septic tank pumping costs.

           1. Tank Size

Septic tanks come in various sizes depending on design elements, such as family size. Typically, a large tank holds more solid waste than a small reservoir. Therefore, emptying a giant septic tank with lots of waste costs more than pumping a small tank. Furthermore, it takes longer to pump a large tank, which increases the service cost.

Homeowners should inspect their septic systems regularly to manage pumping costs. For instance, a small tank fills faster; therefore, late examination of waste level might warrant impromptu pumping and unbudgeted costs. Similarly, regular inspection of a large wastewater processor can prevent early pumping and save money.

           2. Installation Site

A septic tank's location also determines the pumping cost. For instance, obstacles like trees and rocks might affect tank accessibility and warrant additional equipment that increases pumping costs. Similarly, a service provider might need more fuel to pump waste from a remotely installed septic tank.

To approximate pumping costs, a service provider might inquire about the distance from a driveway to a septic tank. Therefore, minimize obstacles around and along a septic tank's path to keep pumping costs down. Additionally, provide an accurate distance to the contractor so they can better estimate the cost.

           3. Septic Tank Usage

Household waste production determines the rate at which a septic tank fills. Therefore, a home that discharges large volumes of wastewater requires more frequent pumping, which can be more costly. Conversely, small households or homes where members travel regularly will likely pay less due to low septic tank usage and infrequent pumping.

A septic tank collects wastewater from all sections of a house. Therefore, homeowners should monitor water consumption to gauge and control septic tank usage. Typically, homeowners pay more if they constantly use water because the septic system fills with wastewater faster.

           4. Geographic Location

Septic tank pumping costs also vary by geographic location. Typically, homeowners can expect to pay more in towns and cities due to the high population density and accessibility challenges. Conversely, rural dwellers will likely pay less for the service because their wastewater processors are easily accessible.

The high land cost in some urban areas also prevents the installation of large septic tanks. Consequently, the average-sized septic systems in urban areas fill faster than the larger tanks in rural areas, which increases pumping frequency and cost. Thus, consider your property's location as you plan to empty your septic tank.

           5. Septic Tank Condition

When preparing for pumping services, a contractor might ask for a septic tank's maintenance and inspection schedule. The information determines whether a detailed examination of a septic system is necessary. Typically, a poorly maintained tank takes longer to empty since a service provider must take precautions to prevent damage. Consequently, the exercise demands more resources, which adds to pumping costs.

Homeowners should observe the recommended maintenance guidelines for septic tanks. A well-maintained and regularly inspected wastewater processor takes less time and effort to pump, and no additional services are required. Therefore, maintain an annual inspection schedule to lower septic tank pumping costs.

Homeowners should pump their septic tanks regularly for optimal performance.

Top Ways You Are Damaging Your Septic System

Many homeowners think of a septic system as a way to remove waste from the home. Here are some of the top ways you may be damaging your system.

Many homeowners think of a septic system as a way to remove waste from the home. They know the septic tank somehow breaks down the waste, but beyond that many homeowners stop worrying about the process. When the septic tank needs pumping and cleaning, they call a septic tank service. The concern comes back in when the homeowner finds out they may have damaged their septic system and caused costly repairs. If this sounds like your situation, here are some of the top ways you may be damaging your system and how to avoid it in the future.

           Toxic Chemicals

You may think the main reason to avoid harsh chemicals in your home deals with your family. You do not want pets and children to become sick. This is an important reason to avoid harsh chemicals, but there are more reasons. Besides the toxins causing possible harm to the environment, they can also cause damage to your septic system.

When toxic chemicals are introduced in your septic system, they begin to break down the very way your system works. Within your septic tank are living organisms. These are small organisms that break down the waste you dispose of through the plumbing systems in your home. The toxic chemicals attack and break down the organisms, causing them to die off. The more organisms that die off, the less waste that is broken down in the septic system.

           Food Waste

You may believe because your septic system can break down human waste that food waste would also not be an issue. This is a myth. The enzymes that break down the waste in the tank are not suitable for breaking down the vast majority of foods. If you introduce various forms of food waste into your system, you have a greater chance of clogging the system with items that are not being broken down or cannot break down in the tanks conditions.

For example, if you introduce coffee ground into the system you can cause severe damage. Coffee grounds do not break down easily if at all. Coffee grounds also contain fats and oils. These fats and oils can cling to the walls of your plumbing and the septic tank. This gives other items something to cling to and cause buildup. Other food items such as solid foods, egg shells, fruit skins and rinds, and cooked foods can cause the same issues, leading to clogs and the breakdown of enzymes.

           Septic Additives

When you start thinking about the health of your septic system, you may start noticing an increasing number to tank products. One of the more common products you will see are septic tank additives. These additives are advertised to help boost the enzymes that are already present in your tank. They are meant to be added at least once a month and said to help do most things from breaking down food particles to giving you more time between necessary cleanings.

           The EPA

has weighed in on these products and how they work with your current septic system. According to the agency, there have been no tests run to truly determine if the advertisements of these additives are accurate. The key to keep in mind with additives is that if you maintain a healthy septic system and do not destroy your current level of natural enzymes in the tank, the additives are likely not necessary. Adding them could upset the balance inside the tank with the enzymes and ultimately the breakdown of waste.

Maintain your septic system by understanding its components and the septic tank's operation. Read on to learn about septic tanks and their inner mechanisms.

Most homeowners know that their septic system plays a crucial role in their home's plumbing, but few understand how a septic tank works. You can maintain the health and proper functioning of your septic system if you understand its components and how they fit into the septic tank's operation. Read on to get up to speed on septic tanks and understand their inner mechanisms.

           Inlet Pipe

The inlet pipe is the first component that the wastewater from your house encounters in the septic tank system. The inlet pipe transports wastewater from the plumbing in the home into the tank. The inlet pipe is usually located at the bottom of the tank.

The inlet pipe uses a lid to prevent the entry of solid materials like dirt and debris into the septic tank system. Additionally, the inlet pipe prevents wastewater from flowing back into the home.

           Baffle

The baffle is a pipe or wall that is placed at both the inlet and outlet of the tank. It serves to separate the wastewater into two layers. The heavier solid particles sink to the bottom of the tank, while lighter waste rises to the top.

The inlet pipe baffle acts as a breaker for the effluence that comes into the system. The outlet pipe baffle helps to reduce the amount of solids that reach the drain field.

Septic Tank

The septic tank comprises of materials like concrete, fiberglass, or plastic and is buried underground. The tank stores wastewater for

, which allows the heavy solids to sink to the bottom and the lighter scum to float to the top. The next step in the sewage treatment process involves anaerobic decomposition or digestion.

Anaerobic digestion is the process of organic matter decomposition in the absence of oxygen. In a septic tank, anaerobic digestion breaks down the organic matter in wastewater, such as human and animal waste, food scraps, and paper products.

This process relies on bacteria, which use the organic matter as a food source. The bacteria break down the organic matter into simpler compounds like carbon dioxide, methane, and other nutrients.

Once the organic matter decomposes, the remaining liquid ejects from the tank and is filtered through the soil. This process helps to reduce the amount of pollutants in the wastewater and helps to protect the environment.

           Outlet Pipe

The outlet pipe is a T-shaped pipe that transports wastewater from the tank to the drain field. The outlet pipe is usually at a lower level, which allows the treated outlet to flow into the drain field. However, the effluent must first pass through the outlet baffle before it flows into the drain field.

The T-shape on the outlet pipe of a septic tank allows for the buildup of solids, scum, and other materials that the bacteria have not fully broken down inside the septic tank. The T-shape slows down the flow of the wastewater that exits the tank, which gives the solids more time to settle and decompose in the tank. This design helps prevents overflows and clogs inside the structure.

           Drain Field

The drain field is a series of perforated pipes buried in the ground. When the wastewater leaves the septic tank, it flows into the drain field, where it passes through the soil for further filtration before being released into the environment. The drain field can feature additional filtration, like gravel and rocks, that further filter the effluent as it drains into the field.

You will need a professional to inspect and maintain these components if your septic tank fails.

Maximize the Life of Your Septic Tank With These Tips

Septic tanks are made to last, but some habits may cause your septic to fail prematurely. Discover some tips to extend the life of your septic tank.

A functional septic tank is critical for a comfortable and healthy home. The septic holds all wastewater from your sinks, laundry, showers, and toilets. So you cannot afford to have this component fail even for a day.

However, although septic tanks are made to last, some habits may cause your septic to fail prematurely. Discover some practices to adopt if you want to extend the life of your septic tank.

Invest in Regular Inspection and Maintenance

Don't wait until your septic shows signs of failure to contact a specialist for inspection and repairs. Regular inspection and maintenance help you to spot potential issues early and fix them before they cause extensive damage.

During a scheduled inspection, your septic professional will check the system's leach field, tank, and drainage area. The expert will also assess the system's mechanical and electric components, which include the filter, septic alarm, pumps, and floats.

Additionally, the specialist conducts a sludge and scum layer thickness measurement to determine if the septic tank needs to be pumped. This period is also the best time to ensure all the inlets and outlets are in good working condition. And that the system's aeration devices are unclogged and properly functioning.

The septic professional will recommend any repairs based on the inspection findings and advise you on the best way to keep your system in good working condition.

Know What You Should and Should Not Flush Down the Toilet

Water is the main ingredient in septic tanks, and some substances should not go down the toilet as they can damage or clog the system. For instance, flushable wipes and sanitary napkins may go down the toilet easily, but they don't disintegrate quickly enough and clog the septic tank's leach field.

Coffee grounds, eggshells, grease, and oils also don't break down easily and can solidify to form a sludge layer at the bottom of your septic tank. This sludge prevents the effluent from flowing out of the tank, causing it to back up and overflow.

Toilet paper is the only thing that should be flushed down the toilet. If you must dispose of other materials, put them in a bin instead.

           Pump Your Septic Tank Regularly

One of the best ways to maintain a functional septic tank is to pump it regularly. The frequency of septic tank pumping depends on the number of people in your household and how much water you use.

Pumping helps remove the solid waste accumulated in the tank over time. This waste includes human waste, paper towels, and flushable wipes. Otherwise, the waste will eventually clog the leach field and cause the septic system to fail.

Don't Plant Trees or Shrubs Near Your Septic Tank

The roots of trees and shrubs can grow into and damage septic tanks and leach fields. So it's best to avoid planting these plants near your septic system.

If you already have trees or shrubs near your septic system, have them regularly checked for root invasion. And if necessary, have the roots trimmed back to prevent them from damaging your system.

           Conserve Water

Too much water can overload your septic system and cause it to fail. So, conserving water when you have a septic tank is essential.

There are several ways you can conserve water in your home. For instance, you can install low-flow toilets and showerheads. You can also fix any leaks in your plumbing fixtures. And, if possible, wash full loads of laundry and run the dishwasher only when it's full.

By following these habits, you can extend the life of your septic tank and avoid costly repairs. Most importantly, work with reliable septic professionals to maintain your system properly.

           Don't Use Powdered Soap

Powdered soaps release fillers into your septic tank. Eventually, the fillers accumulate on the bottom of your septic tank and cause a blockage. This blockage can lead to sewage backup and overflowing toilets. Additionally, clogs in the septic tank cause slow drainage — not to forget the awful smell that may make your home unpleasant to live in.

Instead, use liquid soap that is septic-safe. Also, watch the quantity of soap you use when you do laundry. You may think that when you use more soap, your clothes come out cleaner. However, the more soap you use, the more risk you pose to your septic tank. Most detergents contain surfactants and other chemicals that may harm the helpful bacteria in your septic tank.

The bacteria in your septic tank help to break down the sewage and waste. This process is inhibited when you kill these bacteria with too much soap, and your septic tank may fail as a result.

In the same way, go easy on the bleach. Like soap, bleach also kills the helpful bacteria in your septic tank. As a result, using too much bleach when doing laundry can cause septic tank failure.

Don't Wash Too Many Loads in Quick Succession

Many people have a designated laundry day, but if you have more than a couple of loads to do, you need to designate multiple laundry days. Each time you do a load of laundry, the washing machine releases a large quantity of wastewater into your drains. The increased water flow of multiple successive loads can strain the drain field excessively and cause problems.

Instead, do laundry in small batches across multiple days to avoid putting too much strain on your septic system.

Don't Use an Inefficient Washing Machine

If your washing machine is old, you may need to replace the machine with a newer, more efficient one. Newer models of washing machines use less water per load. That means that there is less water to strain your septic system.

Consider switching to a high-efficiency washing machine the next time you do laundry. Not only will this be better for your septic tank, but it will also help you save money on your utility bills.

           Don't Overlook the Lint Trap

If you are yet to install a lint trap on your washing machine, do so as soon as possible. This component helps to catch lint, hair, and other debris from your clothes that can clog your septic tank.

With time, debris may accumulate on the lint trap, which compromises the trap's functionality. Also, the debris may eventually find its way into your septic tank and cause a clog. To avoid this problem, clean the lint trap regularly. And if you notice that the lint trap is not working as efficiently as it should, replace it with a new one.

           Don't Ignore Septic Tank Maintenance

Good laundry habits should not replace septic tank maintenance. As such, even if you are careful with your laundry, have your septic tank inspected and pumped regularly.

A professional can identify potential problems with your septic system and take the necessary steps to fix them. Also, regular septic tank maintenance will help extend the life of your system.

Should You Consider Septic Tank Inspection Before Buying a Home?

If you are buying a home, you want to invest in the best property. Read this blog to learn why you should schedule a septic inspection before you close.

If you are ready to buy your first home, you need to take the necessary measures to invest in the best property. You want your family to feel safe, contented, and happy over the years because you made an informed decision.

One thing you need to do if you are buying a home that isn't connected to the city's sewage line is to check the condition of the septic tank. A septic service technician can examine the tank and provide a detailed report before you complete the transaction. This piece will share the top reasons why you shouldn't skimp on septic tank inspection.

           Comply With the Local Regulations

Every state has regulations that govern the title transfer process. If you study the local laws in the area where you wish to settle and realize a septic tank inspection is mandatory before buying a residential property, you will have no option but to comply. This will confirm if the septic system matches the structure as per the local code requirements.

The authorities may also need an inspection report if you wish to extend the house and add plumbing. This way, they will determine if the septic tank size will meet the new wastewater treatment requirements or if you will need a bigger sewage tank before they will provide a project permit.

Determine If the Septic System Is Functional

Releasing the payment for a newly found residence without confirming if the septic system is working could hurt you in the long run. After you move in, the system will be under non-stop pressure, so you want to ensure it can treat the water efficiently. The last thing you want is to get a foul odor or wastewater pools a few days after settling in.

Through the inspection, the sewage service specialist will determine if the system is functional and perform the necessary repairs if need be. For instance, they will unclog the pipes and replace the damaged components. The specialist will recommend a septic tank cleaning service if the tank is almost full.

Once this is done, you will avert issues like sewage backups, foul odor, or clogged sewers in the near future. Besides, you will avoid expensive sewage system repair. You can ask the seller to cover the repair costs once you get the inspection report or deduct the amount you spend on the same from the selling price after agreeing.

Verify If the Property Valuation Is Accurate

One way to ensure you get value for your money when purchasing a home is to know more about the property. It is unfair to spend a large sum of money or get a loan for a house only to buy a home that isn't accurately valued.

Inspecting all core systems like the septic tank will help you determine if the seller offers a fair price after an accurate valuation. If you realize that isn't the case, you can inform them about the septic issues and gain more purchasing power. The seller will have to reduce the price or repair the system to match the current valuation if they wish to sell the house to you.

Avoid Exposing Your Family to Health Problems

When you buy a house and the septic tank is full or damaged, you will experience sewage backups and standing water in the sinks and bathroom. The sewage will start leaking from the septic tank, contaminating the yard. Such water contains bacteria and elements that can put your family's health at risk.

Calling a specialist to inspect your septic tank will ensure all repairs are made before you close on the purchase and move in. This way, you will avoid exposing your family to the disease-causing bacteria from the sewage treatment system.

Things That Signal a Dangerous Septic System

A septic system is only efficient and safe if you take good care of it. Read this blog to learn the signs and causes of septic system dangers.

A septic system is only efficient and safe if you take good care of it. Otherwise, the septic system might not handle all the wastes it should and might even become dangerous. Below are some signs and causes of septic system dangers.

           Strong Odors

Strong septic odors are dangerous on two levels. Below is an overview of both.

           1. System Damage

The odors point to a system malfunction that can only worsen with time. The location of the odor determines its origin. For example, septic gases inside the house might mean that:

            Something has clogged the drains

Something has blocked the plumbing vent

            The drain line leaks

Odors outside the house might mean that:

The manhole lid is missing or damaged

Something has damaged the septic pipe or tank

             The drain field has failed

Such damages can allow effluent leakage and its related problems.

           2. Health Risk

The air (because of its oxygen) is the only gas you should inhale. Septic odor is a mixture of dangerous gases that you should not inhale. You can inhale a considerable volume of the dangerous gases if the leak is inside the house and, say, you sleep in it overnight. The inhalation can affect your health.

Secondly, septic gases are explosive. A naked flame can ignite the gases and cause an explosion and its related injuries.

           Damage, Wear, or Abandonment

Septic systems suffer wear and tear, just like other parts of your home. The systems are also susceptible to damage from improper usage, maintenance, or accidents. The risk of damage is high for abandoned systems since no one maintains or services them.

           For example:

A septic tank can crack or float out of the ground

Tree roots can crack open the pipes

Metallic parts can corrode and crumble

            Excavations can displace septic covers

Watch out for septic systems with visible signs of damage. Be careful with septic systems in homes that no one has occupied for years.

For one, such septic systems might leak their effluent and contaminate the environment. Remember that the septic effluent contains numerous microorganisms that might make you, plants, or animals sick. The leakages can even get to the underground water and affect others outside the bounds of your property.

You also risk falling into septic tanks with damaged covers. Apart from the physical trauma (such as joint sprains), you also risk exposure to germs and dangerous fumes if you accidentally fall into a septic tank.

           Flooded Drain Fields

Lastly, you should also watch out if your septic drain field floods or saturates. Such a drain field cannot absorb more effluent from the tank. The absorption failure means that the effluent might:

            Stay on the drain field

            Overflow around the drain field

Flow far, depending on the lay of the land

The flooding exposes the environment to septic wastes, and the exposure can trigger the dangers mentioned above.

Different problems can cause septic drain field flooding. For example, the drain field might flood if:

You use too much water in your house and exceed the drain field's capacity. That might happen if you undersize the septic system or if your household has grown.

Your water usage habits have changed, and you now use too much water at once.

The ground slopes towards the drain field and floodwaters have flooded the field.

The soil in the drain field is compacted.

You have not pumped the septic tank for a long time, and the wastes overflow.

Anything that interferes with the drain field's ability to absorb water can cause flooding.

Many misconceptions exist surrounding septic tanks and how they work, which can lead to problems with the system. Learn the truth about septic tanks.

Many misconceptions exist surrounding septic tanks and how they work, which can lead to problems with the system, its surroundings, and the environment. This article will address some of the most common myths surrounding septic tank services to help homeowners understand the facts about their tanks.

Myth #1: You Can't Fix a Clogged System

In many cases, a septic company can clean blockages out of your septic lines instead of having to rebuild the whole system. Heavy particles can clog septic field lines, causing them to stop draining, especially in septic systems that are more than 20 years old.

If your septic system is less than 20 years old and fails to drain, it might be due to tree roots obstructing the lines, soil problems, pipe structural damage, or a bad design.

Myth #2: You Must Pump a Full Tank

You might think your septic tank is full if you look inside, and that is because the liquid level tends to stay the same. Just because a tank looks full, though, doesn't mean the system needs pumping.

Instead, consider the number of solids that tend to fall to the bottom of the liquid. Liquid waste takes care of itself and exits via the drain field. However, excessive solid waste needs to be removed with a pump. If there isn't a build-up of solids in the tank, you don't have to empty it.

If you experience backed-up toilets or sinks and your tank has not been pumped in a while, it may mean that something is wrong with the sewer lines or that the tank itself has exceeded its capacity. Household septic tanks usually are drained every 3 to 5 years.

Myth #3: You Should Add Yeast

The idea that yeast is excellent for septic tanks is common, yet misguided. Biological organisms found in yeast might cause more harm than good. Yeast causes stuff to build up within your septic tank instead of breaking down the existing sludge.

People often use yeast in their tanks because they mistakenly believe it will help control the growth of bacteria, but the opposite is true. Avoid using yeast as an additive if you want to keep your septic tank running smoothly.

Myth #4: You Don't Have to Pump if You Use Additives

There are products available to maintain septic system health. Some claim that utilizing them eliminates the need to pump altogether. The idea is that introducing certain bacteria and enzymes into the system can improve sewage digestion and prevent pumping.

The truth is that well-balanced septic tanks don't need additives to prevent pumping. If your septic tank already needs to be pumped, adding bacteria will not eliminate this need.

Myth #5: You Can Build Structures Over a Septic System

You shouldn't place any trees, decks, patios, or other structures in a way that would block access to the septic tank or drain field. If your tank is difficult to access, you may need to empty it other ways, which will take additional time and money.

Other potential problems include insufficient ventilation. Proper ventilation is vital for the system to function properly, which in turn will keep the tank from growing algae, becoming smelly, breeding mosquitoes, and generating odors.

Myth #6: You Can Put Anything Down the Drain

Some homeowners may think they can put anything down the drain if it doesn't clog up the system. However, household items like excessive bleach and other harsh chemicals can interfere with the healthy biological balance in the septic system and cause future problems.

Homeowners should have their septic tank serviced every 3 to 5 years. If you are looking for an honest and reliable septic company to help you get your septic system back on track, contact

While many homeowners rely on the city sewage system to take away waste, other homeowners have septic tanks, which handle the waste without the help of the city. If you have kids or pets, you should follow a few tips that protect your family and the septic system. If you would like to know more, check out these three septic system tips.

           1. Watch What Flushes Down the Toilet

Anyone can accidentally drop something into the toilet, but kids may purposely put items in the toilet that can cause issues, such as toys. Naturally, these can clog the toilet, but if they do make it to the septic system, they get stuck there and can't decompose. Similarly, if your kid flushes excess toilet paper or paper towels for fun, your tank could get too full too fast.

In addition, if you have young kids, you may use wet wipes instead of toilet paper. Even if these say they are flushable, do not flush them down the toilet, as they can clog the system. They may also take longer to break down. If you have older female children, make sure they understand not to flush their used tampons and pads.

With pets, you are directly responsible for what goes down the toilet. For example, if you have a cat with a litter box, you may want to flush the waste down the toilet. However, the system may not be able to handle the unique parasites in animal waste. As a result, these parasites can get into the groundwater.

Plus, the litter on the cat waste can stick in the system and sit there, as it cannot break down. Since kitty litter forms clumps, it can also cause clogs in the drains and pipes.

           2. Be Mindful About Play Areas

When you have kids and pets, know exactly where the septic system is to prevent problems. Typically, your kids and pets can play on the drainfield without worrying about puddles and unpleasant odors. However, you do not want to build anything such as a fort, playhouse, or doghouse on top of the septic tank or the drainfield.

First, the weight of the structure could cause direct structural damage to the system, such as causing a crack. If the structure is installed over the drainfield, it can compact the soil, making it hard for the soil to naturally absorb the water. This may lead to pools of effluent. If damage occurs to the septic tank, your kids may end up playing in smelly, wet waste.

           3. Secure the Septic Tank

An unsecured septic tank can be a danger for adults, but septic tanks are particularly dangerous for kids and pets. Both may be clumsy or not know the danger and fall into the tank. You should not go into the tank yourself to rescue them so you will have to call emergency services unless you have a breathing device. The air alone in the septic tank could make it hard to breathe.

Ideally, you need to keep the tank well secured, which means ensuring you have a sturdy lid that your kids cannot open themselves. If the tank needs opening for any reason, keep kids and pets inside or in another part of the yard.

Septic systems are a common solution for household waste. If you have a septic system, keep your kids and pets safe from it while also preventing them from causing damage to the system. If you would like help with your septic system,

Septic tank additives help increase bacterial activity in your septic tank. Because your septic system uses bacteria to break down the solid waste, additives are sometimes a welcome performance boost for your septic system.

Certain types of waste, including cleaning products, disinfecting liquids, and soap, can prevent useful bacteria from thriving in a septic system. A good additive will act as a supplement for these bacteria, counteracting the effects of such toxic waste.

Unfortunately, additives don't always help your septic system. They can end up making things worse, and some have no effect at all. Such possibilities might leave you wondering if you need to use additives in your septic tank at all. However, additives are only meant to boost your septic tank's performance and aren't a substitute for maintenance.

Learn the Main Types of Additives

Septic tank additives are grouped according to their chemical composition and physical nature. You'll need to know how and when to use these additives to get the correct result.

           Biological Additives

You can use biological additives to supplement an overworked septic system. They don't harm your system but can help when you have extra waste in your system.

For instance, you would expect to have a lot of waste from your house from parties and family gatherings during the holidays. Your septic tank will have to work harder than usual to get rid of all the solid waste.

Adding a biological additive can help speed things up. You'll also need to schedule a septic tank pumping session quicker than usual before the waste overwhelms your drain field.

           Organic Solvents

Organic solvents help break down greasy and oily waste. However, they can cause a bacterial imbalance, especially when you use them frequently or in large quantities.

Using organic additives can often kill off useful bacteria that you need in your septic tank and cause contamination in groundwater. Before using organic additives, you should consult with your septic tank contractor, who will examine your system to see if your tank needs organic additives. Doing so ensures that you don't unknowingly harm your septic system, resulting in more problems.

           Inorganic Compounds

Inorganic additives are often strong alkaline or acidic compounds used to unclog blocked drains. However, they are pretty harmful to the bacteria inside the septic tank, often preventing anaerobic bacterial activity.

Instead, raw and untreated sewage could find its way into the drain field. Additionally, inorganic additives could corrode your drainpipes and other parts of your septic systems. Most septic tank experts discourage using inorganic additives in septic systems because they could end up doing more harm than good.

If you notice slow-running drains or a foul smell coming from your drain field, you should schedule a septic tank pumping appointment with your maintenance expert. Using additives in such a case will not yield any favorable results.

           Protect Your Septic System

If you notice any unusual behavior with your septic system, knowing the root cause of the problem can be quite tricky. For instance, you might notice frequent sewer backups or leaking effluent around your drains. A professional septic system expert should help diagnose such problems that pose a serious health risk to you and your family.

Simply adding an additive isn't a permanent solution and may potentially make things worse for your system. Your septic tank system is self-sufficient and uses natural bacteria to break down your household waste. Although additives work to boost waste breakdown, the harmful effects may outweigh the benefits.

Luckily, you can extend the life of your tank by scheduling regular inspections and pumping appointments to keep your system in top condition for years to come. Reach out to

4 Factors That Influence How Often You Should Pump Your Septic Tank

You can easily forget about your home's septic maintenance since the tank is deep in the ground away from sight. However, pumping your septic tank regularly ensures that it serves you reliably for years to come.

You shouldn't let sludge levels in your septic tank get to uncontrollable amounts. If things get out of hand, the tank's watery effluent will carry the excess sludge to the drainfield. Eventually, your drain pipes clog from the solid debris, causing wastewater backups in your toilets and sinks.

General guidelines suggest that pumping your system should happen

           after three to five years

. But in truth, the frequency of septic tank pumping depends on your household patterns and septic needs. Discover four main factors that determine how often you need to pump out your system.

           1. The Amount of Wastewater

Wastewater comes in two forms, both of which require safe treatment and disposal. Gray water comes from washing machines, bathtubs, showers, and bathroom sinks. Blackwater sources include kitchen sinks and toilets. Combined, both types of wastewater contribute massively to the effluent in your septic system.

But with too much wastewater, your septic system can't do its job properly. The bacteria in the tank won't break down the solid waste as fast, and your system fills up quicker. You'd have to schedule septic pumping sessions more often.

           2. The Size of Your Household

More people living in your house means more waste. Additionally, if you have guests over regularly, you'll have more wastewater to deal with. Your septic tank fills up much quicker, hence the need for pumping your septic tank more frequently.

Consult with your septic tank contractor and draft up a pumping schedule suitable to your needs. The contractor will calculate your home's daily average wastewater output to create a rough timeline for the scheduled pumping.

           3. The Size of Your Septic Tank

Septic tank sizes depend on the number of bedrooms in your house. If you aren't sure of your home's tank capacity, learn how to narrow down on your options. For example, a 3-bedroom house is likely to have a tank

           capacity of 1000 gallons

. Similarly, a 1500-gallon septic tank is best suited for a 5-bedroom house.

Because smaller tanks will fill up much quicker, your septic tank expert might suggest a custom pumping schedule. The time intervals will be shorter than the recommended three years, especially if you have a large family.

Additionally, you may have built extra bedrooms to accommodate more people in your house. And since your septic tank was meant for a smaller group, it could fill up faster than usual. Eventually, you would need to pump your septic system more often than you did before.

           4. The Volume of Solid Waste

Your septic system handles solid and liquid waste differently. The liquid waste flows out of the tank to the drainfield and absorbs into the ground. The solid waste stays in the tank, where it disintegrates after getting into contact with anaerobic bacteria. The broken-down waste then settles at the bottom of the tank to form a sludge.

Soon, the accumulated sludge occupies more space in the tank, leaving little room for bacteria to act. Some solid waste eventually flows out into the drainfield because it doesn't have enough time or room to settle to the tank's bottom.

If you generate more solid waste in your home, your septic pumping contractor might suggest that you schedule more frequent appointments. Doing so will keep your septic system in good condition, prolonging its overall lifespan.

A properly running septic tank is vital to a home's operation. When the septic tank quits working, you will experience serious inconveniences, from sewer water backup in your home to serious damage to your home and its surrounding structures. If you do not maintain your septic tank, you could also end up needing a replacement much sooner, which can get costly.

To keep your septic tank in good working order, you should have it cleaned regularly as part of your regular home maintenance routine. The following are some benefits of consistent septic tank cleaning.

           Regular Cleaning Prevents Water Pollution

The liquid matter in a septic tank eventually makes its way to the drainfield. The solid matter in the tank turns into a sludge substance that prevents the passage of liquids. Over time, the liquids, which can be hazardous matter, will stagnate. The stagnated liquid can pollute the groundwater in your area, potentially harming important water sources.

Regular septic tank cleaning prevents the liquids from sitting stagnant and causing damage to your groundwater. The liquid instead drains into the drainfield and keeps everything clean and healthy.

Regular Cleaning Helps Your Septic Tank Last Longer

Just like any other appliance or fixture, regular maintenance of a septic tank ensures it lasts as long as possible. A septic system works hard to remove solid waste from the water in your home. If you do not have the system cleared of clogs and blockages, the septic system can stop working properly.

The lack of maintenance means the septic tank has to work harder to do its job, particularly when it has to contend with years of solid sludge. Regular pumping will give the tank a break and allow it to work more efficiently.

As you clean the septic tank, the absorption area of the soil can dry and can take a break. This helps improve the operation of the system.

           Regular Cleaning Will Save Money

Though regular septic tank cleaning does have a cost associated with it, you will ultimately save money in maintenance and replacement costs over time. If you do not take care of your septic tank, it can leak and damage your home, surrounding structures, and landscaping. The septic tank itself could eventually require replacement if it goes unchecked.

When you keep it in good condition, you don't have to worry about emergency repairs or early replacement.

Regular Cleaning Keeps Your Home Healthy

Above anything else, proper septic tank maintenance and cleaning will keep your home clean and healthy. Septic tanks hold gallons of toxic waste that can harm your family and any surrounding soil and animal life.

The contents of the tank are hazardous and have a foul smell. By keeping the septic system clean of waste on a regular basis, you will avoid all the negative aspects of owning a septic tank.

Regular Cleaning Is Good for Your Home's Value

If you have plans to sell your home in the future, a healthy septic system is a great selling point. As home buyers search for homes in your area, they will be more drawn to a house that has had proper maintenance, including septic tank maintenance. If your home maintenance records indicate you have not properly cared for your septic system, buyers are more likely to pass.

Septic tank maintenance is crucial for the health of your home. The last thing you want to deal with is an unexpected plumbing problem that causes damage to your home. For assistance with your septic tank, or if you have any questions about septic tank cleaning, please contact

Your septic system consists of more than just the tank. Effluent from the tank enters the drainfield, where the final processing of the effluent takes place. Proper care of the drainfield is necessary so you do not have to deal with the problem of raw sewage.

           1. Remove Troublesome Landscaping

The wrong plants in the landscaping around and on top of the drainfield can destroy it, leading to a poorly functioning field and standing sewage on the surface. The biggest danger to the drainfield is tree roots from large trees and the extensive root systems some smaller shrubs produce. Fortunately, you can avoid issues simply by not planting trees and shrubs on or near the drainfield.

Another issue is plants that require ground disturbance. Avoid planting annuals that require that you dig deeply to put them in every year. Further, skip out on perennials that have deep root systems or create a dense ground cover.

           Solutions

The right plants can help camouflage the drainfield and make it a beautiful part of the landscape. The solution is to opt for plants that require very little ground disturbance. A perennial grass lawn or a wild grass meadow provides one option. You can also grow annual herbaceous flowers, although it's best to grow from seed so you don't have to dig up the ground to put in transplants.

           2. Reroute Home Drainage

There are a variety of drainage areas around any home. The rain gutter system on the roof, for example, routes water away from the foundation and downslope from the house. If you have extensive gardens or low areas in the lawn, you may have underground drain tiles to help carry away excess water. Some homes may also have sump pumps, pools, and outdoor water features that occasionally need to drain.

The problem is the drainfield is also often placed on the downslope from the house, so it can become overloaded if all the other home drainage systems run toward it. This leads to a flooded and clogged drainfield that can't process septic waste properly.

           Solutions

Several solutions exist for redirecting run-off. You can build a berm or put in a swale to direct water from the home around the drainfield and toward the nearest safe drainage trench or municipal storm drain. Underground drains can also be installed to route home water runoff safely past the drainfield. A septic service can help you determine the best method for your specific drainage challenge.

           3. Avoid Compression

After roots and flooding, the third biggest threat to your drainfield is weight - especially weight from driving on the drainfield. Most drainfields can handle a little weight, so you can walk across them or use a lawn mower and other home lawn equipment. You do not want to put in a shed or a garage on the drainfield, though.

Although you are not likely to drive on the drainfield, others may not be as careful. If you have service people out to your home, for example, lawn care or builders, they may accidentally park or place equipment on the drainfield since it just looks like a big open space. This can cause irreparable damage.

           Solutions

The simplest solution is to create a boundary that can't be easily crossed. A decorative fence around the field will ensure visitors do not accidentally park there. If there is only one obvious entrance to the field, you can put up a sign or just use a small gate or lawn ornament to block access.
